Female Victim Stabbed in Birmingham City Bus Shelter Assault Dies
A woman stabbed repeatedly to her neck area in an unprovoked attack near a bus shelter within Birmingham has died, authorities verified.
The victim, who was 34, came under attack in Smallbrook Queensway, right beside the Bullring shopping centre, shortly before 21:00 GMT Friday evening, according to police statements.
Djeison Rafael, 21, was presented at Birmingham court Monday morning, facing charges for the attack.
He was previously accused of attempted murder however after the victim's passing the charge has been updated to include murder.
Law Enforcement Actions
Authorities stated police personnel will remain around the city centre on Monday to offer reassurance, while detectives assisted the woman's family.
Detectives are appealing any eyewitnesses who might have observed Mr Rafael, identified as a Black British national, reportedly dressed in grey athletic wear, black hat, trainers with a backpack.
Attack Site Details
The knife attack occurred outside Bullring retail complex, opposite the main entrance of New Street railway station.
Law enforcement confirmed they were treating it as a random violent act and Det Insp James Nix said efforts continue to determine the motive behind.
Witness Accounts
An area worker, who works nearby, recounted paramedic and police activity when she finished her shift at about 22:00 on Friday.
She characterized the location as "quite chaotic", and said some of her colleagues heard a commotion around 9 PM.
"Many my colleagues use transit services, take the tram... our safety is at risk essentially, in the downtown area."
Ashley Birks, 25, from Stoke-on-Trent, said he came to Birmingham fairly regularly to see his girlfriend resident there, and was concerned regarding the incident.
"It makes me worried for my girlfriend," he stated.
"She doesn't drive and works at all of the big music venues... considering something completely unprovoked occurred, understandably, it's horrible."
