Friedrich Merz Faces Accusations Over ‘Concerning’ Immigration Rhetoric

Opponents have charged Germany’s chancellor, Friedrich Merz, of employing so-called “dangerous” rhetoric on migration, after he called for “very large scale” expulsions of persons from metropolitan centers – and asserted that anyone with daughters would support his stance.

Firm Response

Merz, who became chancellor in May promising to combat the growth of the far-right AfD party, on Monday chastised a correspondent who inquired whether he intended to revise his hardline statements on immigration from last week considering broad criticism, or say sorry for them.

“I am unsure if you have kids, and daughters among them,” Merz said to the reporter. “Ask your daughters, I suspect you’ll get a quite unambiguous answer. I have nothing to retract; to the contrary I stress: we must modify the situation.”

Political Reaction

The left-leaning opposition alleged that Merz of taking a page from far-right organizations, whose claims that female individuals are being singled out by migrants with assault has become a international right-wing mantra.

A prominent Greens MP, charged that Merz of having a condescending comment for girls that failed to recognise their genuine political concerns.

“Maybe ‘the daughters’ are also fed up with Friedrich Merz only caring about their freedoms and security when he can employ them to defend his entirely backward-looking strategies?” she posted on the platform X.

Public Safety Emphasis

Merz said his main focus was “protection in common areas” and stressed that only if it could be guaranteed “would the conventional groups regain confidence”.

He had drawn flak recently for comments that commentators alleged implied that multiculturalism itself was a problem in Germany’s urban centers: “Certainly we still have this issue in the urban landscape, and that is why the federal interior minister is now working to enable and conduct removals on a massive scale,” Merz said during a tour to Brandenburg near Berlin.

Bias Accusations

Clemens Rostock accused Merz of inciting discriminatory attitudes with his comment, which sparked small rallies in various urban centers during the weekend.

“It is harmful when incumbent parties attempt to label individuals as a issue based on their physical characteristics or origin,” stated.

SPD politician Natalie Pawlik of the SPD, government allies in Merz’s government, stated: “Migration should not be stigmatised with simplistic or populist automatic responses – such approaches split the community to a greater extent and ultimately helps the wrong people as opposed to encouraging resolutions.”

Political Context

The conservative leader’s CDU/CSU bloc turned in a unsatisfactory 28.5 percent outcome in the February general election versus the anti-migrant, anti-Islam Alternative für Deutschland with its record 20.8 percent result.

Since then, the right-wing party has pulled level with the CDU/CSU, surpassing them in some polls, in the context of voter fears around immigration, criminal activity and economic stagnation.

Previous Positions

Friedrich Merz ascended to leadership of his political group pledging a firmer stance on immigration than former chancellor the former head of government, rejecting her the optimistic slogan from the asylum seeker situation a ten years past and attributing to her some responsibility for the rise of the AfD.

He has encouraged an at times heightened demagogic language than his predecessor, notoriously blaming “small pashas” for repeated property damage on the year-end celebration and refugees for filling up dental visits at the expense of nationals.

Electoral Preparations

Merz’s Christian Democrats met on recent days to formulate a plan ahead of five state elections next year. Alternative für Deutschland maintains significant advantages in two eastern regions, flirting with a historic 40 percent backing.

The chancellor maintained that his party was aligned in barring cooperation in administration with the Alternative für Deutschland, a approach widely known as the “firewall”.

Internal Criticism

However, the recent poll data has spooked some party supporters, prompting a few of political figures and consultants to indicate in the past few weeks that the policy could be unsustainable and detrimental in the long term.

The critics contend that provided that the relatively new far-right party, which internal security services have labelled as far-right, is able to snipe from the sidelines without having to make the hard choices administration necessitates, it will gain from the governing party disadvantage affecting many developed countries.

Study Results

Researchers in the nation have determined that mainstream parties such as the Christian Democrats were increasingly allowing the far right to set the agenda, inadvertently validating their concepts and circulating them more widely.

Even though Merz avoided using the term “barrier” on this week, he maintained there were “fundamental differences” with the Alternative für Deutschland which would make collaboration unworkable.

“We acknowledge this challenge,” he said. “From now on additionally demonstrate clearly and very explicit the far-right party’s beliefs. We will distance ourselves very clearly and very explicitly from them. {Above all
