Individuals Discontinuing Anti-Obesity Medications Gain Back Pounds at a Quadrupled Rate Than Those on Conventional Diets

Weight management often requires long-term strategies.

A recent study reveals that patients who discontinue new GLP-1 drugs like Wegovy and Mounjaro can put back on shed pounds much more quickly than those who stop traditional lifestyle programs.

Findings released in a prominent medical journal demonstrates that while overweight people often shed substantial amounts of their body weight while on the medication, the mass returns at an estimated rate of 0.8 kg per month after stopping.

"People buying such drugs need to be cognizant of the potential of fast weight regain when the medication is stopped," stated lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.

That rate of regain implies a return to starting mass within about a year and a half.

Weighing Approaches

The study, which examined 37 of trials involving thousands of participants, compared the results of these new drugs with older methods.

Scientists point out that individuals who shed pounds through lifestyle changes alone usually experience a slower creep back—approximately 0.1 kg a month—once they finish.

Understanding the Rapid Regain

Nutrition scientists believe the mode of action of the injections is key to understanding the accelerated rebound.

The injections mimic a natural hormone called GLP-1, which moderates appetite.

"Sustained high doses of GLP-1 levels several times higher than the body's typical production could lead to the body to produce less of its endogenous GLP-1, and could diminish responsiveness to its effects," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition specialist.

"Stopping of this medication means appetite is no longer kept in check, making excessive eating a significant risk."

A Lifelong Issue?

Medical guidelines suggest the injections for individuals with weight-linked health risks, alongside recommended lifestyle changes.

A number of clinicians argue that, given the high risk of weight regain, the treatment should be considered ongoing.

This perspective is echoed by drug manufacturers, who state that the results "emphasize the long-term nature of obesity," comparing it to managing diseases like high blood pressure.

Patient Testimonies

People who have discontinued the jabs explain a intense resurgence of appetite.

"I experienced a trigger activating and you're instantly ravenous," described an individual.

The struggle is worsened if users have not adopted permanent dietary or behavioural changes during therapy.

Widespread Interest

Figures indicate that millions of people in the UK have used weight-loss jabs in the past year, with interest being substantial.

  • Adoption is higher among females than males.
  • The middle-aged demographic shows the highest usage rates.
  • Many access the drugs through private healthcare rather than the NHS.

In conclusion, clinicians emphasize that while the jabs are effective agents for shedding pounds, they are not a magic solution and lasting health benefits likely depends on ongoing lifestyle management.
