The Kindness of People We Don't Know: The Way a Gentleman I Barely Knew Assisted Me Obtain the Role That Changed My Life

During the final years of the 1980s, I was embarking on a low-cost journey to the European continent with a companion. Since my companion was considering starting a postgraduate program in NYC, we had planned a 14-day stopover there on the way to London.

We got to the student accommodation, a sizeable 10-storey building on the Upper West Side called International House. Once we unpacked, we went directly to the cafeteria, where we grabbed food, found a table, and started talking to fellow residents.

Adjacent to my seat was an individual of Iraqi origin pursuing an engineering degree at Columbia University. He asked me what I my profession was, and I explained that I had recently completed my studies with a scientific background and had been performing experiments using an electron microscope.

He noted that there was an microscopy facility at Columbia University – close to the engineering faculty, which was how he knew about it. He suggested that I should apply for a job with them. I chuckled at the suggestion, explaining that I was soon departing to Europe and, additionally, I did not possess a US visa.

A day later I toured the city, going back to the cafeteria that evening. The engineering student approached me and let me know that he had arranged an interview for me with the director of the microscopy lab at Columbia. Given that he had made the arrangement, I attended the interview – but straight off told my host that I didn’t have a visa, so I was unable to accept the role.

In typical New York fashion – a city where everything seems achievable – she said: “We'll handle it. When can you start?” I didn't board the aircraft to London.

I held that position for 36 months. One of the benefits was that I also received free tuition at Columbia, and I used the opportunity to complete a graduate degree in global studies.

We didn't cross paths after that and I am unaware of his name, but his selfless gesture transformed my future in multiple respects. I didn't possess the bravery or self-belief to reach out at an prestigious college and ask for a job. And, I had long dreamed to pursue education overseas, but could never have afforded it without that tuition waiver.

Perhaps most importantly, that role at the university paved the way for a role in Europe where I got to know my wonderful partner, with whom I am raising a family of four kids. This was a pivotal life event. That helpful person changed my trajectory in life, and I’m always appreciative.
