The UK authorities has included an additional eleven further destinations to its official alert register regarding the risks of industrial alcohol toxicity from tainted spirits.

This updated warning features Bangladesh, India, Iran, Jordan, Libya, Malawi, Malaysia, Morocco, Nepal, Papua New Guinea, and Rwanda due to evidence showing "a global increase in the incidence of documented incidents" of industrial alcohol toxicity.

Just last month, authorities had earlier included Ecuador, Japan, Kenya, Mexico, Nigeria, Peru, Russia, and Uganda to the standing roster, in response to multiple high-profile events like the deadly demise of half a dozen travelers in Laos in 2024.

Travellers are being advised that even tiny quantities of industrial alcohol can lead to blindness or fatality within 12–48 hours.

Exactly what is Industrial Alcohol and How is it Employed?

Industrial alcohol is a harmful substance typically used in antifreeze, windscreen washer fluid, and thinner. It is not intended for ingestion.

While it is naturally produced during the creation of alcoholic drinks, commercial firms reduce it to non-dangerous concentrations for human consumption through the refining procedure.

But in certain nations, it is surreptitiously added into beverages to cut costs, and as it is tasteless and smell-free, it is extremely challenging to identify.

Official Guidance for Travellers

Government official a senior official stated that all travellers should recognize the indicators of industrial alcohol toxicity.

"If you're consuming alcohol abroad, choose well-known venues and steer clear of homemade alcohol or free shots," the minister advised.

"Should anything appears suspicious, for example a fatigue that's way worse than usual or sight issues – seek medical attention immediately."

The entire roster of nations listed as presenting a danger of toxic alcohol poisoning currently features: Brazil, Bangladesh, Cambodia, Costa Rica, Ecuador, Fiji, India, Indonesia, Iran, Jordan, Kenya, Laos, Libya, Malawi, Malaysia, Mexico, Morocco, Nepal, Nigeria, Papua New Guinea, Peru, Russia, Rwanda, Thailand, Turkey, Uganda, and Vietnam.
